Timing of Fast

Assalam-o-Alikum

First of all, Ramadan Kareem to all... May Allah bless us... May Allah Accept our repentance and forgive our sins Ameen.

Regarding the timing of Fast... Till when we can eat drink. Please Refer to the following Aayat and Hadith

Surah Baqarah, Verse 187 by 3 different translators...

  • 2:187 (Asad) ........ and eat and drink until you can discern the white streak of dawn against the blackness of night, and then resume fasting until nightfall.......

  • 2:187 (Yousuf Ali) ........and eat and drink, until the white thread of dawn appear to you distinct from its black thread; then complete your fast Till the night appears;.......

  • 2:187 (Picktall) ........and eat and drink until the white thread becometh distinct to you from the black thread of the dawn. Then strictly observe the fast till nightfall.....

  • From the above verse, It is clear that We can eat and drink until the dawn breaks. Following is a hadith which supports it

Al-Bukhaari (1919) narrated from 'Aa'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that Bilaal used to give the adhaan at night. The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "Eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktoom gives the call to prayer, because he does not give the call to prayer until dawn breaks."

    Please note

It is a form of Biddat ( Innovation ) to stop eating 5 - 10 or 20 mins before the Azaan of Fajir, Refer to http://islamqa.com/en/ref/12602 and http://islamqa.com/en/ref/38068
